Ramp FTP test (× 0.75)

TrainerRoad-style ramp convention: FTP ≈ 75% of final 1-minute / MAP peak. Convenient but more MAP%-sensitive than a long TT; prefer CP when possible.

Athlete summary

Ride a progressive ramp to failure. Take the highest 1-minute mean power near the end (often treated as MAP). Koyaro sets:

FTP = 0.75 × peak 1-minute power

In trained endurance athletes, sustainable threshold power commonly sits around 72–82% of MAP; 75% is the midpoint convention used by TrainerRoad-style software defaults.

When to use it

  • Quick indoor estimate without pacing a long TT.
  • First-time testers who struggle to pace 8- or 20-minute efforts.

Ramp results are more sensitive to anaerobic capacity and step design than a long TT. Prefer a 20-min test or a Critical Power set when accuracy matters — see FTP field tests — 20-min, 8-min, and ramp conversions and Critical Power, W′, and fit quality.

Literature

  • TrainerRoad (related indoor-training practice) — ramp to failure; FTP ≈ 75% of maximal aerobic power / final 1-min as the default conversion.
  • Population MAP%FTP bands (~72–82%) motivate the 75% midpoint; individual athletes can sit off that line.
